AE Monthly Book Club: November 2016

Even though October has ended we couldn’t just let go of horror that easily. To unease you into the holiday spirit we’ve chosen a classic novel about a family that has a lot to be thankful for…until they don’t.

For November we’ve chosen Shirley Jackson’s final novel, We Have Always Lived in a Castle, the story of the Blackwood family and the dark secrets they keep. The publisher’s description reads:

Taking readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is perhaps the crowning achievement of Shirley Jackson’s brilliant career: a deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family and the dramatic struggle that ensues when an unexpected visitor interrupts their unusual way of life.

There are several different editions of the book so this month we’ll go with chapters instead of page numbers. Here’s our reading guide:

November 1 – November 8: Chapters 1, 2, and 3

November 9 – November 15: Chapters 4, 5, and 6

November 16 –  November 22: Chapters 7 and 8

November 23 – November 30: Chapters 9 and 10

As with every month, we will hold Twitter polls and an opportunity to join the conversation with the hashtag #AEBookClub. If you’d like to suggest a cinema-related book for future book club readings, please e-mail your suggestion to bookclub@audienceseverywhere.net or contact us on Twitter @wetalkmovies.

Happy reading, and may that chill in the air only be a draft.
