Ant-Man is a touchy subject for movie fans. Everyone is still (reasonably) upset by the mutual breakup between Marvel and Wright. I feel sorry for new director Peyton Reed along with the cast and crew. It seems like the world is intent on hating this movie just on principle now (Don’t be assholes, guys). With all this going against it, Ant-Man needed a trailer that shook the world like Guardians of the Galaxy. This trailer doesn’t bring that same thunder. It has a dour tone with a few jokes thrown in the midway point and at the end. With the rest of the marketing focusing on the silly concept, I expected to see more of the humor Marvel is known for.
There are good things here so I won’t sweep that under the rug. The serious vibe might have worked better for a second or third trailer (The UK Guardians of the Galaxy trailer has a much different vibe than the other ones). But I like the way everything looks. I like the idea that this is a smaller-scale movie, focusing on the ideas of legacy and that Pym is fighting to preserve a good future for his daughter. This doesn’t look like the fate of the world is at stake. Lord knows we’ll get that in spades during the Age of Ultron shenanigans. Final note: We all know Paul Rudd is just going to be great here don’t we?
