Ana Lily Amirpour is the real deal. We didn’t need a follow-up film as proof.
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, one of the best horror films of the current millennium, earned enough of our affection to solidify the status. So yeah, Amirpour is the real deal, demonstratively more visionary and interesting than a list of male former indie directors whose small-scale features leap-frogged them into the realm of top shelf cherished franchises. And it looks like she’s about to slay any notion of a sophomore slump with The Bad Batch.
The day after releasing the thrilling-if-controversial trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, Annapurna released the first trailer for Amirpour’s new film The Bad Batch. This dystopian and romantic horror thriller seems to borrow and ignite the creative energy of the director’s previous effort, adding a brightened neon color palate, a certain searing energy, and, holy shit, perhaps the most intriguing cast of any film on the near horizon. The Bad Batch stars Suki Waterhouse, Jason Mamoa, Keanu Reeves, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna, and Jim “where the hell have you been?” Carrey.
The Bad Batch is set to open on June 23rd. We’ll keep you updated with future developments, but for now, you can see the trailer here.
