Disney has been on a roll (at least financially) with its past four live-action re-imaginings of its animated classics; Alice in Wonderland (2010), Maleficent, Cinderella (2015), and The Jungle Book (2016) have all made a big hit at the box office. And two of those films are good! After returning to Wonderland and bringing to life Pete’s Dragon later this year, Disney will release what could be one of their biggest films ever, Beauty and the Beast, a live-action adaptation of… well, one of their biggest films ever.

The teaser trailer released today is exactly what can be expected from a teaser of a film a year away. It’s light on plot explanation (but who doesn’t know the plot at this point), with a heavier emphasis on style, mood, and setting. Especially that last one. There are a lot of looks at Beast’s furniture, like something out of a “Brooding Prince: Interior Design” magazine.

The trailer also shows a glimpse of Emma Watson’s Belle, who looks good in the role. Also shown was a bit of banter between Ewan McGregor’s Cogsworth and Ian McKellen’s Lumiere, with McKellen telling Cogsworth that he is a fool of a Took. The characters are splendidly cast, and under the direction of Bill Condon, it should end up being a charming and festive film.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney animated film, and this teaser’s invite makes me eager to revisit the classic. Let’s see if the tale as old as time still has that magic 26 years later.
