Weekend Box Office

Deadpool continued to reign supreme in the #1 spot for the second week in a row, bringing in $55,000,000 total, bringing its domestic net gross to $235 million, proving once and for all that comic book fans like their superhero fare a little profane and with plenty of blood and guts. And with any luck, 20th Century Fox will take heed of the Merc With a Mouth, and make the final Wolverine movie starring Hugh Jackman just as irreverent and illicit as Wade Wilson’s stunning star turn.

Coming in at #2 is DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 3, which drew an added $12,500,000, bringing its total up to $117,104,584, proving that the Jack Black starring animated franchise is more capable of maintaining its hold on the average viewer’s attention than your typical family friendly fare.

At #3 is the biblical motion picture adaptation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that is Risen, which garnered a grand total of $11,800,000 for distributor Columbia Pictures during its first weekend in theaters. Starring Joseph Fiennes as a doubting Roman soldier, the film apparently struck a cord with some of the more religiously devout movie goers, and proved itself as another capable Christian movie epic.

Following the resurrection of the Holy Trinity on the big screen, Robert Eggers’ long-awaited feature film debut The Witch took the #4 spot on its debut weekend with a total domestic gross of $8,685,270, once more proving the unfortunate state of affairs that independent films are currently in in regards to attracting a sizable general audience, especially within the horror genre.

Lastly, How to Be Single maintained its hold at #5, while bringing in an additional $8,220,000, which brings its total sales up to $31,763,633. Meanwhile, Race debuted at #6 with $7,275,000, and Zoolander 2 fell down to #7 at $5,500,000 with a combined total of $23,718,011.

Overseas Numbers

It would appear as though Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller have an appeal that reaches far beyond the borders of the United States, as Deadpool now holds a total foreign gross of $256,500,000, bringing its world wide box office take up to $491,894,887, and all this despite being banned in China.
