Weekend Box Office
If you thought Tomorrowland was disappointing, wait until you see these box office results.
Tomorrowland wasn’t so well received critically (including our own Richard Newby) and the box office reflects a lousy word of mouth with a disappointing opening at $41.7 million over the four-day weekend. It was initially slated to bring in a solid $50 million which would still be disappointing given the massive $180 million production costs which doesn’t even include distribution costs.
Pitch Perfect 2 kept the right tempo to stay strong at second place, even with a 56% drop from the previous week, ending the weekend with $38.5 million. The film has brought in $126 million in the first two weeks alone, a surefire victory for women directors and female led comedies everywhere.
Mad Max: Fury Road may be the greatest thing to happen to humanity since the invention of the wheel, but are we treating it as such? Sort of. The best movie of all time took a dip to $32.1 million for the four-day weekend, with a total of $95.5 million domestically.
Avengers: Age of Ultron stuck around in the top five by pulling in $27.8 million. This leads the movie to a total of $410.9 million domestically. Not as strong numbers as the first Avengers but hardly worth being disappointed over.
Poltergeist opened to better than expected numbers of $26.5 million, landing in the number five spot for this weekend. Since it cost only $35 million to make, we should probably expect a sequel announcement once the box office is all tied up.
Overseas Box Office
Internationally Tomorrowland made 26.7 million from 56% of the international marketplace not including Japan or China. No single foreign territory has hit double digits in the millions.
Pitch Perfect 2 has opened in in number one spots in several territories tallying the foreign numbers to $61.7 million. Worldwide the Bellas have brought in $179.5 million.
Mad Max: Fury Road topped Tomorrowland in France by 45% and stands as the number one film with $3.3 million for the weekend and a total of $10.6 million overall in that territory. MMFR has made $62.1 million worldwide.
Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed another $46.6 million in week 5 from 95% of the foreign markets (91 territories to be exact). The film currently stands at a total $1.27 billion.
