Twin Peaks: The Return, Part 6

Recap: We begin where last week’s episode left off, with Cooper staring transfixed at the statue outside Dougie’s office. A security guard arrives to take him home, where Janey-E seems to finally start picking up on his abnormal behavior. She makes plans to take him to a doctor, and sends him upstairs to say goodnight to Sonny Jim. In Sonny Jim’s bedroom, he and Cooper play around with his clap-activated lamp. Downstairs, Janey-E opens an envelope found on their porch and finds a photo of Dougie with Jade. As chews out Cooper for his infidelity, the phone rings, and...

Twin Peaks: The Return Part 5

There is actually something to note about the opening credits – they are really reminding me of the absence of the classic Angelo Badalamenti score. There’s a more traditional score seeping in, but not much of it is recognisable. We begin with various shots of Vegas and Rancho Rosa. It’s kind of beautiful if brief, and got me thinking that the location-hopping of this show is actually working really well. The world of the show is feeling a lot more expansive than before, while making the original town feel even quainter by the minute. Outside Dougie’s car in Rancho Rosa, the...

The Handmaid’s Tale: Jezebels

In this episode, we learn a bit more about Nick and sense the awakening of his moral compass through his compassion for June. As the episode opens, June is sitting on Nick’s bed, feeling guilty because Luke is alive but she goes back to Nick frequently—because it feels good. We then flash back to Before, and see Nick at a career counseling place. He apparently has a hard time holding down a job, and when he’s heckled in line he punches the man who heckled him. Rather than chasing him off and telling him not to come back, the...

Doctor Who: The Lie of the Land

DOCTOR WHO – SEASON 10 EPISODE 08 THE LIE OF THE LAND WRITTEN BY TOBY WHITHOUSE DIRECTED BY WAYNE YIP This week promises a lot: the finale of the Monks trilogy, the return of Missy from the Vault (if it is her in the vault), and someone getting shot. From the trailers, it looks like this is going to be a Bill-centric episode with a plot like one of those awesome alternate universe episodes of Fringe, so basically, all the things I like. If you’re sitting comfortably, let’s begin. We open with a David Attenborough style history lesson (narrated by...

Twin Peaks: The Return Part 4

How about those opening credits? Okay, fine I’ll stop talking about them. Still at Silver Mustang Casino, now the owner of the casino has turned up to get Cooper off the premises as quietly as possible, before he bleeds the entire place dry. The old woman starts to call him “Mr. Jackpots”, so that’s what I’ll start calling this version of Coop. After winning 30 mega jackpots, he meets Bill Shaker, who in a confused conversation lets him know that he’s Dougie Jones, and he lives in Lancelot Court, the house with the red door. Escorted to the owner’s...

Twin Peaks: The Return Part 3

While both parts 3 and 4 are available, I’m going to do them both separately. So, to be clear, this is not going to be the behemoth post last week’s turned out to be. And that’s not surprising really, there’s a little less to chew on this time around. I’ve got to say, this title sequence is excellent. You’d think they wouldn’t touch the original, but I believe they’ve created something incredible. I still can’t get over those waves fading into flowing red velvet fading into a dizzying shot of the red room’s floor pattern. I might end up...

The Handmaid’s Tale: Where the Boys Are

In the previous episode, June learned that Luke was still alive—the episode ended with a visiting Mexican diplomat pressing a notebook into her hand so that she could write her husband a note. It follows, then, that this episode focuses entirely on Luke’s story. We learn that he was, indeed, shot when they were trying to flee to Canada, but that he survived and later escaped from a crashed ambulance. We also learn how the family came to be traveling on that remote road. They had previously escaped from the city and were living in a cabin owned by...

Doctor Who Recap: The Pyramid at the End of the World

DOCTOR WHO – SEASON 10 EPISODE 07 THE PYRAMID AT THE END OF THE WORLD WRITTEN BY PETER HARNESS & STEVEN MOFFAT DIRECTED BY DANIEL NETTHEIM After last week’s headtrip into the Doctor watching an episode of Doctor Who, we continue the story of the monks and the Doctor’s blindness. This arc has the potential to be something very special so let’s see how it goes. Recap: We begin with an odd previously on… as it shows events from last week but intercuts them with current events. I’m not going to rehash what came last week so I’ll focus on...

The Handmaid’s Tale: A Woman’s Place

In this installment, Gilead prepares for a visit from the Mexican ambassador. The handmaids are tasked with scrubbing bloodstains off of the walls where dead bodies are usually hung as examples of what will happen to those who misbehave, and Jeanine comments on how it looks strange without the bodies—people can get used to anything. At the Waterfords’ house, tension is high because the Ambassador will be coming over for dinner, and life in Gilead must be shown in the best light. Mrs. Waterford warns Offred to speak wisely to the visiting diplomats. For the first time in the...

Twin Peaks: The Return Part 1 and 2

There’s no show like Twin Peaks. There really is no other show that I would make a subscription to a streaming service for its merits alone, drink coffee and stay up late writing about. In fact, if it wasn’t for the fact I have a 9-to-5 I would likely have been sat refreshing my browser at 4am when the show is set to air in the U.K. Instead I am here, promising you a recap that’s a little different. Not because I have any particular plans, but because even Twin Peaks recaps resist normalcy. We begin in the black lodge, watching the...

Doctor Who: Extremis

DOCTOR WHO – SEASON 10 EPISODE 06 EXTREMIS WRITTEN BY STEVEN MOFFAT DIRECTED BY DANIEL NETTHEIM So the Doctor is blind and the vault might be/could be/should be opening by now. It’s possible the BBC had a huge reveal that they’ve spoilt for no reason or maybe they’re smarter than that and it’s all a bait and switch. Let’s find out. Recap: We open “a long time ago” with an unknown character giving a voice over about the increasing problem of death and how to kill everyone. He introduces himself as sort some of executioner for all living things and says...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Weekly Recap – Episode 5, Faithful

Episode 5: Faithful In this week’s episode, some time has passed. Offred has, at this point, played 34 games of Scrabble with the Commander, and is feeling comfortable enough with him to share something approaching real opinions. He gives her a gift—a fashion magazine a la Cosmopolitan—and although she says it is not allowed, he says, “It is with me.” Offred—hereafter referred to as “June” in flashbacks for the purposes of these summaries—recalls when she first met Luke. She and Moira are waiting at a hot dog stand, looking through Tinder, and lamenting the string of bad dates June...

Doctor Who Recap: Oxygen

DOCTOR WHO – SEASON 10 EPISODE 05 OXYGEN WRITTEN BY JAMIE MATHIESON DIRECTED BY CHARLES PALMER The trailer for this one had by blood pumping as base under siege episodes are bread and butter Who stories that have a pretty good success rate. Add in the fact that I watched Alien pretty recently and that this season has been pretty much killing it each week, I was beyond ready for this week’s episode. So let’s do it. Recap We open in space and a familiar voice saying familiar words: “Space. The final frontier…” says the Doctor in voice over as two...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Weekly Recap – Episode 4

Episode 4: “Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum” In this episode, the character of Commander Waterford is developed further, and we gain insight into his behavior toward Offred. A lot happens in 50 minutes, so bear with me. At the start of the episode, Offred is still locked in her room (having failed to become pregnant the previous episode) and the Commander learns that an Aunt (leader/instructor of the Handmaids) escaped from a Red Center and made it across the border to Canada, where she gave an interview to the Toronto Star. The Commander calls her tales hyperbole, yet it’s clear...
