The film we never thought would happen now has a teaser trailer. Welcome to the world of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049.
Blade Runner is my favorite movie, so yeah, my heart is soaring right now. Just that little snippet of footage looks fantastic. Deckard’s opening narration tugs on the nostalgia strings, and Villeneuve’s direction showcases clear parallels to Ridley Scott’s. But the true star of this trailer is Roger Deakins cinematography. The orange and yellow hues that make up most of the trailer are a far cry from the blue and gray dreariness of L.A., but no less exquisitely shot. If anyone is able to follow the path set by the late, great Jordan Cronenweth, it’s Deakins. There’s little doubt that Blade Runner 2049 will be one of the best looking films of 2017.
While plot details have been kept closely guarded (and will hopefully remain that way) it’s clear that Ryan Gosling’s character is the new Blade Runner, tasked with hunting down replicants. What we’re unsure of is whether he’s enlisting Deckard to help him, or to destroy him. As he says “things were simpler then.” There’s no doubt we’re in for some surprising character journeys that push this world forward, and make us reconsider what humanity means, just as the original film did.
Blade Runner 2049 will be released on October 6th, 2017.
