The latest, and final trailer for Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, finally gives us a sense of the larger conflict at play and introduces Mads Mikkelsen’s character into the fold. While rumors have flown for half the year about post-production changes and Disney’s desire to give the film a lighter tone, this trailer depicts the film we were promised: a war film in Edwards’ unmistakable style. Sure, the trailer leans heavily on optimism and a few familiar story beats, but we were never going to get a Full Metal Jacket-styled Star Wars film. Ultimately this is a universe geared towards hope and younger audiences, and will always be recognizable as Star Wars. What’s apparent from the trailer is that Edwards is bringing the same kind of human drama, set in the midst of chaotic grandeur, that made both Monsters and Godzilla so successful. Just a few years ago we had no new Star Wars, now we’ve got one every year. So reshoots be damned, Rogue One looks to be the event of the holiday season!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will see theatrical release in the U.S. on December 16, 2016.
