Rumors have executives at Paramount Pictures requesting that the next Star Trek film be reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy, and it looks like they got their wish. Harking back to an introduction from the first beloved entry in this new franchise, The Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” plays over the entirety of the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond. It injects a sense of fun into a franchise that is known for ideological pondering, but is often forgotten for its underlying sense of adventure. And don’t forget this trailer is also playing in front of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so I imagine the action-heavy sense is tailored specifically to tap into that fanbase as well.

In its current iteration, Star Trek is perfectly suited to a Guardians of the Galaxy tone, with its newfound sense of optimism and focus on ensemble interplay. While dozens of episodes of original Star Trek focus on weighty ideas, it’s important to remember the episode where the crew of the Enterprise stumbles upon a society who has modeled themselves after 1920s gangsters? I know people are going to complain about this new trailer feeling even more un-Trek-like than ever, so just keep the episode, “A Piece of the Action,” in the back of your mind.  Love or hate the new Star Trek films, this is a trailer focused on bringing the action goods, and director Justin Lin has that nailed down.

We’ll find out if Star Trek Beyond does the series justice on its fiftieth anniversary come July 22nd, 2016.
