Set during the Golden Age of Hollywood, Hail, Caesar! follows the life of a studio fixer over the course of a single day wherein he’s presented with a plethora of problems in need of his assistance. The new Coen Brothers comedy stars Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johannson, George Clooney, Jonah Hill, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, and Patrick Fischler; with Clancy Brown, David Krumholtz, Christopher Lambert, and Dolph Lundgren. Without giving anything away, the trailer reminds us how great the directing Coen Brothers are.
One question: Why isn’t this movie coming out in 2015? It looks like an obvious awards contender, as all Coen Brothers movies are, but then again so did Inherent Vice, a movie that deserved awards contention and never saw any. Goofy Coen Brothers movies are hidden gems. Sure No Country For Old Men and their more serious work gets all the credit in the world, but there’s something to be said for how they use comedy to propel characters and plot, down to the mannerisms of their actors. Josh Brolin lightly jogging away from Tilda Swinton when she asks for the truth. George Clooney being asked, “Wondering what’s going on,” as he beings to nod and grumble like a confused dog. Scarlett Johansson’s exchange with Jonah Hill, “It’s part of the job, miss.” February, why are you so far away?
Hail, Caesar! opens on February 5th, 2016.
