Movie Podcast of the Week

Denzel Washington is the Greatest Actor of All Time Period

It’s probably going to be easy to guess what this podcast is about but I’ll summarise anyway. DWITGAOTP is hosted by W. Kamau Bell and Kevin Avery and is a weekly podcast about their love for Denzel Washington, and go through his movies one by one giving them ratings and analysing their Denzelishness.

Most episodes focus upon a movie in Washington’s career and the hosts discuss it between them or with a guest. As the show has gained popularity though they have widened their focus to include discussion of black actors/actresses as well as other issues like gender in Hollywood and the role of black film critics.

The podcast is funny, insightful, and, if you’re a Denzel fan, the perfect chance to listen to like-minded people talk about your favourite actor. They also get fantastic guests like Spike Lee, Ava DeVernay, Ryan Coogler, and Sterling K. Brown.

Where to Begin: You could start with your favourite Denzel or start with our editor-in-chief’s favourite which just happens to be episode one, The Equalizer.

Non Movie Podcast of the Week

Comedy Bang! Bang!

Realistically if you enjoy comedy and you listen to podcasts then you’ve listened to Comedy Bang Bang. However, maybe you’re reading this and you’ve just decided you want to get into podcast listening and you’ve never heard of Comedy Bang! Bang! In that case you’re in for a treat.

Hosted by Scott Aukerman, Comedy Bang! Bang! is a weekly podcast in which Aukerman interviews comedians and stars of TV and movies. The usual format will be that the first half is an interview between Aukerman and the guest and the second half will feature either another comedian or the original guest playing a character who Aukerman will try and interview as it inevitably spirals out of control.

Comedy Bang! Bang! is a masterclass in comedic improvisation as the guests playing characters will bring enough about their character to get the ball rolling and then will improvise the rest as Aukerman and the other guests ask them questions and try to trip them up.

Where to Begin: A good start is to find the first Jason Mantzoukas/Andy Daly episode (episode 74) and follow their pairings right up to the explosive finale in episode 300. Also, anything with Paul F. Tompkins or Lauren Lapkus is gold. Otherwise just start with the most recent and work it out from there.
