Movie Podcast of the Week
Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso
This one is a bit of a cheat as it is not wholly focused upon movies. Sam Fragoso’s show features interviews with not just movie makers but all manner of creative interesting people from the world of acting, activism, writing, comedy, criticism, podcasting, music, or sports.
Fragoso is an excellent host with a mild, easygoing style that seems to perfectly put his guests at ease. This isn’t a talk show that only focuses on a guest’s most recent project and they are encouraged to open up and talk about their lives, their careers, and anything else they feel like. It is a breezy listen and a great chance to hear about what makes some of your favourite creators tick.
Notable guests have included Matt Zoller Seitz, Eric Andre, Lauren Lapkus, Melanine Lynsky, Don Cheadle, Alan Arkin, Zoe Kazan, and many others so take your pick and give it a listen.
Where to Begin: Find an interview subject you like and dive in.
Non-Movie Podcast of the Week
Hidden Brain is a treasure trove of ideas, knowledge, and wisdom for anyone who looks around at the world and wonders what the hell is going on with everyone all the time. It looks at the patterns and trends that shape our world and brings in experts to try and give us some idea of why the world is the way it is and why it’s also changing to be something else most of the time.
Host Shankar Vedantam is your guide as each episode investigates some aspect of human behaviour and why we act the way that we do. Episodes have covered becoming unstuck from your life, slang, the cost of forgiveness, why people join terrorist groups, climate change and why we do nothing about it, decision making, and Trump, among many others.
This is one of those awesome podcasts that prepares huge ideas in a way that is easily digestible and engaging. It manages to make you feel smarter and gives you something to talk about next time you’re at a dinner party and want to show off how clever you are.
Where to Begin: The episode about slang is a fantastic taster but you can always just find a subject you’re interested in/want to be interested in and go from there.
