Movie Podcast of the Week
The Next Best Picture
I’m a trivia nerd and I love to see how the sausage is made (literally, as I worked at a butcher shop for a few months years ago). I’m a big fan of procedural movies when they really get into the cogs and gears of how things work, and that’s why I love this podcast.
The Next Best Picture is a movie review podcast that also dedicates whole episodes to each year’s awards race delving into the Baftas, the Globes, the guild awards, etc. in order to get an idea of what’s going to happen come Oscar time.
The nerd in me finds it fascinating to hear the minutiae and maneuvering that studios get into to get gold for their film and also how each award influences the next and how a movie builds or loses traction over the awards season. Outside of the nerd in me I also like well-made podcasts with affable, knowledgeable hosts that know their shit, and this podcast delivers on that too.
Where to Begin: The most recent episode I listened to was the episode reflecting upon the 2017 Oscars (episode 28), and it was enlightening to hear the hosts talk about how their predictions were formed for each category and how certain movies got unexpected wins or snubs.
Non Movie Podcast of the Week
It’s been awhile since I featured an Australian podcast, but the wait was worth it. Future Sandwich is a podcast about science and technology in which host Tommy McCubbin meets with different people working in particular fields to pick their brains about what innovations are coming our way and how and why they will work/fail.
This is one of those podcasts that is lean (the longest episode so far is 30 minutes) and full of interesting people saying amazing things you can drop at parties to look smart. It also gets out into the field as rather than just studio interviews the podcast gets McCubbin trying things out such as test driving the Tesla car while interviewing a technician about it.
Future Sandwich is like the foodstuff it’s named after. Handy, full of goodness, satisfying, and something you can enjoy on the go. Get it into your ears and you’ll feel smarter straightaway.
Where to Begin: Start from the start or check out the episode list and find a technology you want to know more about.
