Podcasts are awesome (especially From First to Last) and each week sees brand new, fantastic shows appearing, demanding to be fed into your ears. How do you decide what to listen to and what to ignore? Not to worry; Audiences Everywhere has you covered. Each week we’ll give our picks for the best podcasts you should be listening to about movies (and other things) so you don’t have to make any more hard podcast decisions ever again.
Movie Podcast of the Week
Asian Oscar Bait
It’s always been a problem, but the recent whitewashing of Asian characters in blockbusters Doctor Strange and Ghost in the Shell, has really brought the issue of representation in Hollywood when it comes to Asian stories and characters back into the centre of cinema conversation.
Asian Oscar Bait is a podcast about this conversation. Each week hosts, Melissa Powers and Matthew Eng, take an Asian story (and not just East Asia but the whole continent…except Russia) and pitch the story to Hollywood. If studios are looking to make Asian stories with Asian actors then Asian Oscar Bait has those stories, and they are good stories. There’s political stories, Hollywood tragedies, war stories, and the story of the Donut King of California.
Each episode also begins with some recent movie news concerning movies with Asian stars or movies that should have Asian stars but have gone the Matt Damon route instead. The podcast has a very particular focus and it is a fascinating one. It is a story telling podcast with a singular purpose. Hollywood is lacking originality and has issues with representation that we should long be past in 2016, so execs need to listen to this very podcast and say, ‘Yes, the world needs Merle Oberon’s story being told and we need more shelves for all the frigging Oscars it’ll win!’
Where to Begin: The podcast is in its early days so catch up from the start.
Non-Movie Podcast of the Week
Book Shambles with Robin and Josie
Robin Ince and Josie Long are stand ups and hosts of podcasts which have a penchant for getting guests on that I love. No other podcasts feel as tailor made for me personally than Ince’s and Long’s do. Their old series, Utter Shambles, had Alan Moore, Tim Minchin, Edgar Wright, and Terry Jones among others, and their new show, Book Shambles, keeps up that tradition, and adds more women guests too.
The podcast format is simple: Ince and Long are joined by a writer or book enthusiast with the intention of talking about books, which does happen though along the way there’s all manner of sidetracks and digressions. A great example is the Christmas special with Mark Gatiss that devotes a good chunk of its run time to discussing Christopher’s Lee baldness. I love this podcast because it is funny, unashamedly clever, and the hosts are both utterly wonderful.
Where to Begin: The aforementioned Mark Gatiss episode is a winner, but I would listen to them all from the start.
