Movie Podcast of the Week
Till Death Do Us Blart
This is a pretty simple concept: Five podcasters, the hosts of The Worst Idea of All Time and the titular brothers of My Brother, My Brother and Me, watch Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and discuss it. The weirder element is that they intend to do this once a year, every year, for the rest of their lives. When they die they will be replaced and in theory the podcast will run eternally, perhaps passed down to their children or perhaps new hosts will need to be found Dalai Lama style.
Either way, this is a very funny podcast about a very unfunny movie (though opinions on that are divided on the podcast). Each episode is basically five hilarious people riffing on a movie that currently has a 5% rotten tomatoes rating and which is made up essentially of fat jokes and scenes involving Segways. There have been two episodes so far with an infinite amount planned for the future. There is a sense that as the years go by sweet desperation will kick in but at the moment there’s still a lot of fun to be had.
Where to Begin: Start at the start with the episode entitled 2015 and go from there until you die.
Non-Movie Podcast of the Week
Digging Six Feet Under
It is always great to find a podcast about a show, genre, artist, or subject you like. Sometimes you don’t have people in your life to discuss your love of a certain thing with, or you’ve exhausted all the conversation, articles, thinkpieces, and trivia you can find, and a good podcast is just the answer to that drought. Now what’s best though is when that favourite thing is coupled with a dynamite hook.
Digging Six Feet Under is a podcast all about the classic show, Six Feet Under. Each episode takes a single episode and recaps it discussing its themes, concepts, and the ongoing story of the Fisher family. What makes Digging Six Feet Under something very, very special is that the host, Victor Rubio, is a licensed funeral director.
Rubio, like the main characters of Six Feet Under, knows a thing or two about the industry of death and a life spent around those no longer living. Throughout each episode while Rubio gives excellent analysis of the show he will occasionally interject with tidbits and insider knowledge about the world of funeral directors and how accurate/inaccurate the show is at depicting that world. It is a fascinating insight into an industry that so many of us fear and avoid, and coupled with great analysis of the show makes this a fantastic podcast for fans of Six Feet Under or people people interested in the processes and day to day life of a funeral director.
Where to Begin: Episode one.
