Podcasts are awesome (especially mine) and each week sees brand new, fantastic shows appearing, demanding to be fed into your ears. How do you decide what to listen to and what to ignore? Not to worry; Audiences Everywhere has you covered. Each week we’ll give our picks for the best podcasts you should be listening to about movies (and other things) so you don’t have to make any more hard podcast decisions ever again.

Movie Podcast of the Week

The Next Picture Show

gVTU6PKbCreated by the editorial staff of the late and much lamented Dissolve, this podcast is a roundtable discussion movies focusing on how the old influences the new. No movie exists in a vacuum so it’s fascinating to see the cues new movies take from the past.

The structure of the podcast is that each episode is broken into two with one week focusing the discussion on an older movie and the next discussing it in terms of a newer, similar movie. For example, the first episode focuses on All the President’s Men and then the next episode compares it with Spotlight. They tackle the filmmaking techniques on display, the writing, the themes, and show how the classic movie influenced the modern one, and how the modern one improved on elements of the classic. The team of hosts: Keith Phipps, Tasha Robinson, Scott Tobias and Genevieve Koski (the former editorial staff of The Dissolve) are entertaining, funny, and knowledgeable. This feels like the movie conversation we all wish we were smart enough to be having and this team welcomes us to the table to listen in and see if we can learn something.

Where to begin: There’s no real linear structure to the episodes so you can find a movie you’re interested in and use that as a jumping off point, or go from the start and try and get caught up.

Non-Movie Podcast of the Week

With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus

ll-300x300There seems to be a growing trend that the path to fame for some comedians goes stage then podcast then TV and movies. There are tons of comedians who I only became aware of through their podcast work, and then from there have managed to find their live stuff on YouTube. My current favourite is Lauren Lapkus, an incredible improviser whose character work is top tier.

Her podcast, With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus, is a great platform for her to show off her amazing talent. The show will have a guest (a murderer’s row of great podcast comedians like Jason Mantzoukas, Scott Aukerman, Andy Daly, and P.F. Thompkins) who is ostensibly hosting their own podcast about whatever and they bring in a guest played by Lapkus. Lapkus is unaware of what the show is and who her character is until she is introduced and then she riffs with the host.

The show is hilarious, clever, and also terrifying as Lapkus demonstrates powers of improve comedy I can never hope to master. Each episode is vastly different and a chance to hear a comedian you may not have heard before and whose career you can then become obsessed with, much in the same way I did with Lapkus, Mantzoukas, Thompkins, Daly, Aukerman, et al.

Where to begin: Anywhere. Each episode is basically standalone but you’re going to listen to them all eventually  so maybe just dive in at the start.
