With Neil Blomkamp’s  Alien on the indefinite back-burner, as the director announced on his twitter, Ridley Scott is going full steam ahead with his Prometheus franchise. While the prematurely announced Alien: Paradise Lost was a misnomer, Scott’s next movie has finally been announced with a new title atached: Alien: Covenant. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in ALIEN with ALIEN: COVENANT, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with PROMETHEUS, and connects directly to Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), the survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

It looks like Noomi Rapace’s ill fated expedition not only lead to the loss of her entire crew, but possibly her own life as well? Given Scott’s less-than-consistent franchise continuity and mythology as seen in Prometheus, we may yet see the inception of the Xenomorph in this sequel. Or this will be another semi-standalone story set within the Alien universe. At the very least, we’ll begin seeing casting announcements as soon as the movie begins shooting in February.

Will Alien: Covenant involve a Halo crossover? We’ll find out when the film hits theaters on on October 6th, 2017.
