A few weeks ago on the Weekly Roundup, I mentioned Michelle MacLaren as a possible director I’d like to see tackle the Wonder Woman project. My prayers may have been answered as The Wrap and Latino Review report MacLaren is the frontrunner for the Wonder Woman job. MacLaren has directed over 40 episode X-Files, 11 episodes of Breaking Bad (including favorites such as “Salud” and “To’hajiilee”), the 3 good episodes of The Walking Dead, and 4 episodes of Game of Thrones. Her first GoT episode dealt with two characters fighting a bear and her last episode involved a massive sword fight near a snowy cabin. She can direct action. She knows how to handle sword fights (something Diana Prince excels at) and she can stretch a budget. Most importantly, she knows her genre fare. She was practically born to direct a Wonder Woman movie.
On a less groundbreaking note, thanks to a report from Variety, it looks like Jai Courtney will continue being shoved down our throats as Hollywood’s next big thing in Suicide Squad. Tom Hardy, Will Smith, Jared Leto, and Margot Robbie are in different stages of signing onto the David Ayer project. If these rumors pan out, Courtney will come off his Hollywood conveyor belt to play Deadshot. In the comics Deadshot is often the leader of the squad, keeping an eye on things from a distance. Hardy is to play Rick Flag, a character I know nothing about besides him being a member of the Suicide Squad. Robbie and Leto are being courted to play Harley Quinn and Joker. Smith seems to be being courted for Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang. I never thought we’d see that one coming. A decade ago, Smith probably would have headed his own DC standalone movie. That’s what he gets for After Earth.
