The feature film reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from 2014 had a lot going against it. It held the Michael Bay aesthetic without the director’s synchronicity for mayhem, an awkward mean spirit for what is essentially a children’s movie, and bulky, turtle designs that left fans unhappy. It lacked a sense of fun that comes with the territory of four talking teenage mutant ninja turtles. However it made enough money and fans to warrant a sequel.

The latest trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is already better than the first movie. We open with shots that I’m convinced Michael Bay had his hands in on a second unit shoot, with swooping dutch angles featured the most prominently. There’s a goofy allure that taps into a personal. The turtles have a giant dumpster truck as their mode of transportation. The Foot Clan are ninjas as they were in every other iteration. Bepop and Rocksteady are here, as men turned into a giant pig and humanoid rhinoceros. A Rhino drives a tank. It looks fun. At the very least this one aims to please fans of the series.

As a relatively new TMNT fan, somebody needs to explain to me what those flying things are in the trailer. My first thought is Kraang, but this sequel already appears stuffed with nonsense, and it’s my kind of nonsense. I’m glad to see Stephen Amell pop up as Casey Jones, though it’s a little odd to see a grown man fighting ninjas and mutants with hockey pads. I’m also glad to see Tyler Perry be in another potential hit after his shockingly good turn in Gone Girl. Will his role as Baxter Stockman earn him as much acclaim? Only time will tell. However, there’s a really odd, gratuitous shot of Megan Fox wearing what appears to be a school girl outfit. Why? I’m not sure. And Will Arnett is also back for reasons I’m not sure about. Bottom lin, if director David Green can nail the vibe in this trailer we can expect a lighthearted fun entry for the beloved franchise.
