I knew Irvine Welsh had written sequel, prequel and spin-off novels to his original masterpiece, Trainspotting, but I never thought the movie would get a sequel, especially not twenty years later. Even more surprising is that I never imagined myself getting this excited at the prospect of seeing Renton, Sick Boy, Spud, Begbie, and Diane again.
The full trailer has dropped for the sequel, T2: Trainspotting, and it promises to have the same energy and creativity of the original 1996 classic. The cast has returned, Danny Boyle has returned, John Hodge has returned, and it all looks as though they’ve simply stepped right back into the same world twenty years later without missing a step.
The trailer is full of wild images like Spud tipping his chair back off the edge of a flat or a rainy goal celebration in someone’s living room, and pulses with energy. Underworld provide some of the music and Ewan McGregor is back talking about choosing life, only now you can choose Facebook, Twitter, reality TV, history repeating itself, and wishing you had done it all differently.
I never thought I would be excited for a Trainspotting sequel and now, after this trailer, I can’t imagine why I wouldn’t be.
T2: Trainspotting will see theatrical release in the US on February 3, 2017.
