Luc Besson gave us another look at his upcoming sci-fi epic, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, based on the graphic novels the changed the shape of science-fiction.

While box office history has shown us that science-fiction properties based on seminal works don’t always capture the fanbase to match their budget during their theatrical runs, it’s hard not be excited about the unique offering on display here. Besson has always been a director who has offered visionary works, and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets looks like the kind of bold and weird science-fiction that we rarely see tackled in film anymore. Naturally, Valerian will draw comparisons to Jupiter Ascending, but I think we’d be lucky to have that kind of irreverence, and detachment from the grounded nature that seem like a box to check off for so many blockbusters. We don’t get to place where films like Mad Max: Fury Road can happen by playing it safe, so bring on Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets in all of its madcap oddness!

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens on July 21st, 2017
