New information was released today on Luc Besson’s upcoming directorial feature, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, with the official plot synopsis reading in full:
Principle photography has commenced on the Luc Besson written and directed film VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, slated for release July 21, 2017. Besson based his screenplay on the French science-fiction comic series, “Valerian and Laureline,” created by artist Jean-Claude Mézières and writer Pierre Christin. Also starring in the film is Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu. Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Based on Dargaud’s French science fiction graphic novel series “Valerian and Laureline” created by Jean-Claude Mézières and Pierre Christin.
Considering how eagerly audiences devoured Lucy, which made over $400 million dollars on a $40 million budget, and his seeing as how Taken produced an entire trilogy, Besson has proven that he still has the magic touch to put butts in seats. Valerian seems like the Besson of The Fifth Element fame, exuding boldness without apology, but with a hint of social satire. Will he top the visual majesty of The Fifth Element? Only time will tell.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets begins production on January 5th, 2016 in Paris.
