The first trailer for Luc Besson’s science fiction extravaganza, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets has arrived and in the best way possible, it looks like the spiritual sucessor to Jupiter Ascending that some of us have been waiting for.
Besson’s science fiction movies, The Fifth Element and Lucy have remained polarizing since their release, and Valerian doesn’t look like it’ll shift public opinion much, but it does look like a cult classic in the making. Starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, Valerian is based on the French science-fiction comic, Valérian and Laureline which ran from 1967 to 2010 and is considered to be one of the most influential works of science fiction, despite being unknown to most American sci-fi fans.
The movie certainly has a comic book aesthetic but it’s designs, and what we can tell of the film’s tone, seem far out in comparison to most contemporary science fiction blockbusters. While some audiences tend to be a bit hard on big-budget properties they’re unfamiliar with, especially when they delve deep into the trenches of weirdness that can’t be boxed, we’re thinking Valerian will be a must see film next summer if simply for the imagination behind its visuals.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will arrive in the US on July 21st, 2017.
