Movies I am Looking Forward to Watching:
As the first animated movie of 2015, Strange Magic is something that I cannot deny. Oddly enough, to me this looks like a cross between Rise of the Guardians and Shrek, but is inspired by “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I have not and do not have any intention of reading Shakespeare’s play and that is a win for me, because I’d rather watch this film without prior knowledge of the story. One aspect that rubs me the wrong way is the element of the musical numbers. Why are they singing? Why are they singing contemporary songs? I can look past it, for the sake of the animation. That’s what I keep telling myself.
When I read Don’t Point That Thing at Me, the book this movie is based on, I was genuinely looking forward to it. The first promotional material I saw for the movie was a poster, and I was slightly confused to see a man who looked like Johnny Depp. I was then doubly confused when I confirmed it was him. Call it naive thinking, but I still believe there is something that this movie can offer, even with Depp, who is supposed the be handsome art dealer who still possesses a quality that is indicative of his work with Tim Burton. The plot could be strong enough, Jock could distract me from the awfulness of Depp, and Depp could surprise me. I’m swaying back on forth on this one, and I won’t be able to make up my mind until I watch it.
Netflix Hidden Gem I’ll Check Out:
When I saw the title of Richard Newby’s recent Netflix Hidden Gem, I thought, “Holy crap, Richard. Why recommend and expose people to something so terrible?!” I was thinking about the adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s The Host. Thankfully, it’s not. The trailer is limited in dialogue. The suspense is enough to pique my interest and the horror, I’m gathering, is not too much for me to handle. Perhaps my prior obsession with Korean dramas will diffuse the American sensibilities that Richard mentioned.
