The Tale of Princess Kaguya

The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Toho, 2013

From Studio Ghibli, The Tale of Princess Kaguya is about a bamboo cutter who finds a tiny girl inside the bamboo. Believing she is a deity, he and his wife take care of her. True to the nature of bamboo, she grows rapidly. This movie approaches animation on a completely different spectrum, mimicking the visual aesthetic of watercolor paintings. Studio Ghibli productions maintain a purity standard, taking animation back to its 2D roots and reinvigorating it as an art.

Survivor

One name: Kevin Sorbo. The actor who played Hercules in the television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is one of the reasons I am willing to give Survivor a shot. I loved this show as a kid. Set in the future, space travelers discover a planet that may be suitable for human existence. To be certain, the crew lands on the surface and surveys the area. Waiting for them are beasts and men eager for a kill. The special effects are on the same level as the Syfy channel; listen to the sound effects for the lasers going off in the trailer and you will know what I mean.

Netflix Movie I’ll Check Out:

Earth to Echo

The alien lifeform, in my eyes, a cross between WALL-E and E.T., crashes onto Earth. A group of kids discovers the robotic alien and names it Echo. Immediately following the crash, other people are in pursuit to capture what fell from the skies. The kids merely want to help Echo get back home. This movie reminds me of The Last Mimzy in the sense that the future is shaped by the hands of children, and it’s something we forget. An added bonus: The Mowgli’s are one of my musical obsessions, and they cut a track for this movie. The science fiction/fantasy angle of this movie and The Mowgli’s sounds like a win-win situation.
