This week is a little different than others, I want to watch a crap-ton of movies that are being released this weekend. Does this mean the movie-release lull is over? I sure hope so. I’m ready for my local theater to take my money.

Movies I am Looking Forward to Watching:

Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance

You know it’s going to be good when one of the first things you see is an older man in his briefs. (Breaking Bad anyone?) I am an admirer of illusionists, an opportunity to be in awe; I can never pass that up. I cannot recall the last time Michael Keaton was featured as the leading role in a movie; I have a sense it has been an awfully long while. Recently, Natalie Stendall, from Writer Loves Movies, recollected about 21 Grams. If that is any indication of Alejandro Iñárritu’s work, I have no doubt this movie will fascinate me.
My Prediction: 5 out of 5

The Book of Life

Awww, what?! An animation about El Dia de Muertos?! I only had to see the (now) iconic sugar skull make-up to be sold. Additionally, it is a Halloween movie for those with weak hearts when it comes to anything horror related. With animation, there is always a risk when introducing a movie that exudes a particular style. The Book of Life can be instantaneously recognized in a single frame based on the design of the characters and the color pallette. I’m a Disney fan, no doubt about that, but let’s not forget that there are other animation studios out there and this movie is a clear reminder of that.
My Prediction: 5 out of 5

Dear White People

You laugh. You laugh because you cannot believe how accurate it is. My cheeks already hurt. I already know I will be smiling and laughing during the duration of this movie. Who am I kidding? I laugh pretty easily. What is practically genius about this movie is its satirical angle. Dear White People brings to the forefront, the discussion of racism in our culture today. What most people will liken to in this film, is the ability to identify with the struggle to find who you are and how you are integrated, or how you fail to integrate, with a group of people.
My Prediction: 5 out of 5
