Box Office Results
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes once again controlled the box office for the second week in a row and raked in $36 million to add to its box office total of $139 million. Apes threw a one-two punch over a trio of new releases including The Purge: Anarchy starring Friday Night Lights’ favorite Panther, Zach Guilford (Sorry Tim Riggins) coming in at $28.3 million and fellow sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue at $18 million.
The star-studded Jason Segal, Cameron Diaz R-rated comedy Sex Tape failed to turn on moviegoers earning just $15 million its opening weekend.
Movie News
By the Sea
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are teaming up on the silver screen again for their upcoming project, By the Sea. Unlike Pitt and Jolie’s first co-starring effort, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, By the Sea will be a character-driven drama that Jolie will direct, co-write, produce and star in. We already know their chemistry together is magical and we can’t wait to see this talented pair on screen together again!
A Trio of Reboots Get Directors
Can you believe it’s been 12 years since The Ring terrorized us so much we refused to answer our house phones for fear of hearing “7 Days” at the other end? According to The Hollywood Reporter, up-and-coming filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez has signed on to direct The Ring 3. If that name sounds familiar, maybe its because he was also tapped to helm the upcoming remake of The Crow.
Speaking of directors, Variety is reporting that filmmaker Mark Romanek has entered negotiations to direct Overlook Hotel, the prequel to The Shining. Former Walking Dead show-runner Glen Mazzara wrote the script for Overlook Hotel, which is based on a short prologue Stephen King had originally written in The Shining before it was cut from the book. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more details on these movies when more news is released.
