Movies I am Looking Forward to Watching:

Helicopter Mom

There are some movies you can anticipate being awful but still capable of making you laugh. I anticipate Helicopter Mom is that good/bad movie. Nia Vardalos stars as Maggie, a single mom with colorful taste and an inability to let her son Lloyd (Jason Dolley) grow up without her intervening in every aspect. Lloyd’s high school graduation looms closer and Maggie grows distraught at the thought of financial burden. The easy fix? Maggie applies her son for a scholarship and is awarded (Yay!) the National Out Gay Student Scholarship. I find Vardalos effortlessly funny, her Greek charm shining through. The mother-son relationship seems too far fetched. Dolley is oddly familiar and after a brief search, he is a child star from Disney’s rapidly declining television shows…I am glad to see him escape and cultivate his acting career elsewhere.

Little Boy

I will continue with another feel-good movie and give Little Boy a shot. A family endures the trying time of a father being shipped off to war. In his absence, the longing of his youngest son, brings to light questions of faith and the strength in being able to believe. Pepper Flynt Busbee (Jakob Salvati) is the epitome of children’s innocence and imagination. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the town and its unrealistically pristine counter to the terrain of war.

The Water Diviner

Directed by and starring Russell Crowe, The Water Diviner is an adaptation of a novel with the same name, written by Andrew Anastasios and Dr. Meaghan Wilson-Anastasios. After the Battle of Gallipoli, Joshua Connor, an Australian farmer and water diviner, searches for what he values most: his three sons. The compelling aspect about this movie is how Arabian Nights and Turkish history and culture are interwoven. If you can help it, do NOT watch the trailer; it is a massive spoiler from beginning to end. Somehow, I still can overlook knowing what exactly is going to happen.
